Painting on Hunting/Gathering Activities

This is the first of my paintings forming a mini-series showing different eras of human society from pre-hisoric to modern times. The title of this first painting is 'Hunting/Gathering'. Also shown is the write-up placed in the exhibition brochure.

This first hunting/gathering era stretched for a very long time, from the very beginning of hominid history, for millions of years until the last 10,000 to 12,000 years when other types of societies evolved.

Within this long era. a modern type of humans evolved at around 100,000 years ago. They were more intelligent and were better able to communicate among themselves. They gradually accumulated a number of useful tools and practices, and most importantly domesticated fire. Fire set human apart from other animals, giving them some control over the cycles of day and night and more freedom of movement. It also strengthened relationship networks within societies. Small communities could be formed although life was still nomadic.

Advances in language especially the use of simple symbol systems occurred at the same time that homo sapiens developed. There could be some simple economic activities. Gradually there were less hunting and more gathering by women.

My Art Website

I'm glad my painting exhibition went well. After this event, I decided to create a website mainly to display my paintings from this exhibition. Also shown are my other paintings and my other artworks.

The URL of this website is at www.onesunartist.com. The texts to accompany these paintings are the same or similar to those in the exhibition brochure.

Since then I have changed my activities to do some writing about myself and to self-published them as 3 books.

Now while looking for ideas for a 4th book, I thought about writing to tell more about my paintings. As these paintings are related to the theme 'Our Changing World', they can go into complex topics. If I can do good write-ups on them, together they would be interesting as a blog, or a book.

A Theme for my Paintings

In 2008 when I tried to do my oil paintings around a certain theme, I noticed some of my paintings were already about humanity and our human society. These are things close to my heart. Thus I continued to paint more around this theme.

Near the end of 2008, I noticed I had sufficient paintings to submit as my portfolio for an oil painting exhibition. When I need to look for a proposed title, I notice I already had a 3D art exhibition in 2007 on 'Our Wold Today'. I could not re-use the same title. Thus I gave it the name 'Our Changing World'.

I sent this exhibition proposal to Ngee Ann Cultural Centre, the cultural arm of the philanthropy organisation Ngee Ann Kongsi. This is the same centre that sponsored my 2007 3D art exhibition. In Dec 2008, I was delighted to be told they also agreed to sponsor this painting exhibition. The scheduled date was Oct 2008.

I thus continued to work hard doing more paintings around this theme 'Our Changing World'. Near Oct 2008, I had to start preparing for an exhibition catalog brochure. In addition to supplying the name and size I followed my previous practice of supplying a short write-up about the background to the painting's content and my about my feeling as the artist. The lengths of these write-ups vary from 30 to 200 words. Sometimes a longer write-up was necessary on contents that normal viewers are not familiar with the content. These serve to educate the viewers.

This may not be a common practice for art exhibitions. But the theme of my exhibition is unusual and required explanation. I am quite happy with doing it this way.

This is the cover of my exhibition brochure.

And here is a typical page from this printing exhibition brochure.
